How did the Quran reach Azerbaijan and what is its history there?

Azerbaijan is a country in the South Caucasus region, bordered by Russia, Iran, Turkey, Armenia, and Georgia. It has a population of about 10 million people, most of whom are Muslims. The first official introduction of Islam to Azerbaijan took place during the caliphate of Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him), who sent an army under Hudhayfah ibn al-Yaman to conquer Azerbaijan in 642 CE. The Quran, as the primary source of Islamic faith and practice, was also brought to Azerbaijan by the early Muslim conquerors and missionaries. The Quran was recited, taught, and copied by many scholars and students in Azerbaijan, who also contributed to its preservation and interpretation. Some of the famous Quranic scholars from Azerbaijan include Abu Bakr Muhammad ibn al-Husayn al-Azdi (died 829 CE), who was one of the seven canonical reciters of the Quran; Abu Ja'far Ahmad ibn Muhammad al-Azdi (died 894 CE), who was a renowned exegete (mufassir) of the Quran; Abu Bakr Ahmad ibn Ali al-Azdi (died 955 CE), who was a famous jurist (faqih) and hadith scholar; Abu al-Fadl Muhammad ibn Abd al-Rahman al-Azdi (died 1030 CE), who was a prominent theologian (mutakallim) and philosopher; Abu al-Qasim Abd al-Rahman ibn Muhammad al-Azdi (died 1066 CE), who was a renowned grammarian (nahwi) and lexicographer (lughawi) of Arabic; Abu al-Hasan Ali ibn Ahmad al-Azdi (died 1117 CE), who was a famous poet and myst What are the main features and challenges of translating the Quran into Azerbaijani language?

The Azerbaijani language is a Turkic language spoken by about 30 million people, mainly in Azerbaijan, Iran, Turkey, Russia, and Georgia. It has two major dialects: North Azerbaijani and South Azerbaijani. The official language of Azerbaijan is North Azerbaijani, which is written in Latin script. South Azerbaijani is spoken mainly in Iran, and is written in Persian script.

The first attempt to translate the Quran into Azerbaijani language was made by Mirza Fath Ali Akhundzadeh (1812-1878), a prominent writer and reformer. He translated the first chapter of the Quran (Al-Fatihah) and some verses from other chapters into North Azerbaijani, using the Cyrillic script. However, his translation was not published or widely circulated.

The first complete translation of the Quran into Azerbaijani language was done by Mirza Alakbar Sabir (1862-1911), a famous poet and satirist. He translated the Quran into South Azerbaijani, using the Persian script. His translation was published in 1912 in Tehran, with the title "Tarjuma-i Qur'an-i Karim bi-Zaban-i Turki-i Azarbayjan". His translation was based on the Persian translation of Mirza Abul Fazl Gulpaygani (1847-1914), a prominent Shia scholar.

Since then, several other translations of the Quran into Azerbaijani language have been produced, both in North and South dialects, and in different scripts. Some of the notable translators include: Molla Nasreddin (1870-1931), a journalist and social critic; Mirza Kazim Bey (1880-1946), a scholar and educator; Ziya Bunyadov (1921-1997), a historian and politician; Vasim Mammadaliyev (1930-2009), a linguist and academician; Ali Riza Uzunoglu (1933-2015), a theologian and professor; Elshad Miri (born 1965), a writer and translator; and Ali Nesin (born 1965), a mathematician and philosopher.

The main features of translating the Quran into Azerbaijani language are:

  • The use of simple, clear, and fluent language that conveys the meaning and style of the original Arabic text.

  • The use of appropriate terms and expressions that are familiar and acceptable to the Azerbaijani culture and context.

  • The use of footnotes, parentheses, brackets, or other devices to explain difficult or ambiguous words or concepts.

  • The use of diacritical marks or symbols to indicate the pronunciation and intonation of the Arabic words.

  • The use of tables, charts, maps, or illustrations to provide additional information or clarification.

The main challenges of translating the Quran into Azerbaijani language are:

  • The difficulty of avoiding errors, mistakes, distortions, or contradictions in the translation process.
